2021 Virtual Juneteenth Festival in Second Life
and Editors Choice!

Juneteenth Virtual Art Exhibit Project Overview:

The Juneteenth Virtual Art Exhibit was a significant and timely project, celebrating the newfound recognition of Juneteenth as a national holiday in 2021. Building on the success of the Black Lives Matter Virtual Art Exhibit, this event aimed to honor the rich cultural heritage and historical significance of Juneteenth through powerful and inspiring art.

The Juneteenth Virtual Art Exhibit marked a significant milestone for our organization, as it was hosted in our new and official building after becoming a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Building on the success of the Black Lives Matter Virtual Art Exhibit, this event aimed to continue our mission of preserving heritage and highlighting the work of talented artists.

The exhibit was recognized as an Editor’s Choice in Second Life, further cementing its impact and reach. Each artist’s work was showcased in the virtual space, and their stories and messages were amplified through interviews on my Manifest Your Brilliance Podcast. These in-depth conversations allowed the artists to share their perspectives and inspirations, ensuring their voices were heard and celebrated.

Held in June 2021, coinciding with Juneteenth’s recognition as a national holiday, the exhibit celebrated this historic moment through powerful and inspiring art. Hosted in the virtual world of Second Life by Linden Labs, the exhibit featured our new two-story gallery space. This time, the second-floor gallery showcased the work of seven exceptional artists, each able to submit multiple pieces, providing a richer and more diverse display of art.

The call for artists was once again put out via Instagram, and the response was overwhelming, demonstrating the community’s continued eagerness to participate and share their work. The exhibit’s immersive environment included virtual food and drinks, enhancing the realism and engagement for visitors. Recognized as Editor’s Choice in Second Life, the exhibit attracted significant attention and praise.

Each artist’s work was not only showcased in the virtual space but also highlighted through interviews on my Manifest Your Brilliance Podcast. These interviews provided a platform for artists to share their stories and inspirations, ensuring their voices were heard and celebrated.

I was also honored to be interviewed by a creator from Davis, California, where I shared insights about the event and my inspiration behind it. Being part of this historic moment as Juneteenth became a national holiday was a profound experience, and I am proud to have contributed to its celebration through this innovative virtual exhibit.

Successful Turnout

  • Event Attendance: The exhibit was attended by over 200 guests in Second Life. While this was a substantial number, it was smaller than the previous Black Lives Matter Virtual Art Exhibit, which attracted over 2,000 guests. We believe this difference in turnout can be attributed to the easing of pandemic lockdowns, allowing more people to engage in physical events.

Positive Feedback

  • Engagement and Interaction: Visitors praised the immersive and interactive elements of the exhibit, particularly the virtual food and drinks, which added a unique layer of realism and engagement.
  • Diverse Representation: The inclusion of artists from Nigeria and Ghana, alongside African American artists, was highly appreciated. Guests valued the global perspective and the diverse representation of the themes of freedom and independence.
  • Artist Insights: The podcast interviews were a standout feature, providing deep, personal insights into the artists’ journeys and their thoughts on freedom and independence. Visitors found these conversations enriching and enlightening.

Technical Challenges and Learning Experiences

  • Access Issues: Some attendees reported experiencing technical issues that prevented them from accessing the event. While these issues were unfortunate, they provided valuable learning experiences for improving future virtual events.
  • Tech Support: Moving forward, we plan to enhance our technical support and provide clearer instructions to ensure a smoother experience for all participants.

Community Impact

  • Cultural Celebration: The exhibit successfully celebrated Juneteenth as a national holiday, providing a meaningful platform to honor the history and achievements associated with this important day.
  • Artist Support: By giving artists a platform to showcase their work and share their stories, the exhibit supported their creative efforts and amplified their messages.

Lessons Learned

  • Event Timing: The timing of the event, coinciding with the easing of pandemic restrictions, likely impacted attendance. Future events may benefit from additional promotion and engagement strategies to attract a larger audience.
  • Virtual vs. Physical Engagement: The shift from a fully virtual engagement during lockdown to a mix of virtual and physical interactions highlighted the changing dynamics of event attendance and participation.

The Juneteenth Virtual Art Exhibit demonstrated the power of virtual spaces in celebrating cultural heritage and supporting artistic expression. As we continue to innovate and adapt, we look forward to creating more impactful and engaging experiences.
